The HI (Health Insurance) exam gives you more time per question than M9A, but the passing score is strict. We break down the 50-question format, the 70% cut-off, and why "Bill Calculations" kill scores.

CMFAS HI (Health Insurance) Passing Score & Exam Format: The "Memory" Trap

If you are sitting for the Health Insurance (HI) exam, the format might seem generous on paper.

  • Total Questions: 50 MCQs.
  • Duration: 1 Hour 15 Minutes (75 Minutes).
  • Time per Question: 1.5 Minutes.

Compared to M9A (1.2 mins/question), HI feels relaxed. You have time to think.

This is a trap.

The difficulty in HI isn't speed; it is Precision. You either know the exact MediShield Life claim limit for 2026 ($1,630), or you don't. No amount of extra time will help you derive that number if you haven't memorized it. (Psst... We have put together a guide on the best HI study tools & mock exams here.)

Here is the breakdown of the exam mechanics and how to secure your 70%.

✨ At a Glance: HI Exam Stats

  • Passing Score: 70% (35 Correct Answers).
  • Total Questions: 50 MCQs.
  • Duration: 1 Hour 15 Minutes (75 Minutes).
  • The Risk: Each question is worth 2%.

The "Weightage" Risk (2% Per Question)

Just like M9A, the HI exam has a small question count (50).

  • 1 Question = 2%.
  • You can only afford 15 mistakes.

If you are weak in Chapter 2 (Medical Expense Insurance) and get 8 calculation questions wrong, you have blown half your safety buffer. You cannot afford to "punt" the math chapters. (Have a go at our free mini mock exam to help you test your knowledge of the new syllabus here.)

The "Bill Calculation" Format

The most unique feature of the HI exam format is the Hospital Bill Scenario.

You will see a question like this:

> "Mr. Tan (Singaporean) stays in a Private Hospital for 5 days. Total Bill: $20,000. He has an Integrated Shield Plan with a $3,500 Deductible and 10% Co-insurance. Calculate the claim payout."

Why this is hard:

  1. Pro-Ration: You must apply the correct Pro-Ration Factor (e.g., 25% or 35%?) before deducting anything.
  2. Order of Operations: Bill -> Pro-Ration -> Deductible -> Co-insurance -> Payout. If you mix up the order, you get the wrong answer.
  3. Limits: You must check if the daily claim exceeds the MediShield Life limit ($1,630/day).

See our breakdown on the difficulty of the HI exam here.

Exam Logistics: What to Expect

  • No Negative Marking: Never leave a blank. If you don't know the exact claim limit, guess. You have a 25% chance.
  • Case Studies (Chapter 15): These usually appear at the end. Save 15-20 minutes for these. They involve analyzing a client's existing "Portable Medical Benefits" or "Group Insurance" to recommend a rider.

Summary: Accuracy is King

In passing the HI exam, knowing the concept isn't enough. You need to know the number.

  • Is the deductible $3,000 or $3,500?
  • Is the Co-insurance 10% or 5%?

These details change every year. Ensure your study material is updated for the April 2025 changes, or you will be memorizing the wrong answers. For official updates, check the SCI website.
